Vet lists top 5 overused dog names you should always avoid

Thousands of Brits have pet dogs – after all, they’re said to be man’s best friend.

But, while you may think your pooch is unique and lovable in their own unique way, it turns out they may not be very different to their other four-legged pals. That’s because five dog names are being overused by British pet owners.

Amir Anwary, known as @amirthevet on TikTok, is known for making viral videos about his job. From offering tips to pet owners to making people laugh with his funny stories – he’s famed for sharing brilliant advice.

Recently he revealed a few names are being overused though, and some of the most popular may surprise you. Coming in fifth place is Charlie, which is known for being a popular name for dogs.

In 2023, it was actually the most favoured name for male dogs in the United States, according to Rover.com. Blue Cross also stated it made it into the top 100 dog names in the UK.

Another well-liked name is Milo, which is thought to be a good fit for a gentle or easy-going dog. In the UK, it’s actually thought to be the most popular male dog name.

Perhaps inspired by Harry Potter, Luna also made the list. In 2023, it was actually recorded to be the most popular name for dogs in the UK and the United States.

In Latin, Luna means “moon”, and it’s believed the character in JK Rowlings’ novels inspired a lot of people to opt for the name. Luna is also the name of a cat in Sailor Moon.

Lots of people also opt for the name Max, which is an especially popular pooch name in the United States. It’s considered a good choice for a dog that is confident and caring.

But, according to Amir, he comes across the name Bella the most. It’s often considered the most common female dog name, as it means “beautiful” in Italian, Spanish and Greek.

Hundreds of people have viewed Amir’s video since he shared it, and they were quick to comment too. People have all sorts of thoughts as to what makes a good pet name.

One person said: “The name Charlie is the best. He just sounds like your best friend.”

Another wrote: “Don’t forget Daisy.” A third replied: “Defintely not surprised by any of these.”

Meanwhile, a fourth also commented: “Years ago my husband wanted to name our puppy Bella because of Twilight. I said absolutely not, so we named her Sookie after True Blood.”
