Stop car windshields from freezing overnight using household item

A man has shared an unusual hack to stop your car windshield from freezing.

Motorists will be familiar with the difficulties of driving in winter and how icy cold weather can affect cars. Very cold days can cause frost to settle on your car and one TikTok user, HerbieLad49, has found an easy way to stop frost building on your windshield.

He posted a video showing how he put a large tea towel directly on top of his car windshield to stop it from freezing. In the video, you can see him peeling the frozen towel off the windscreen to uncover the clear, frost-free windscreen underneath.

He wrote a short caption for his video to sum up the results of the unusual car hack, writing: “Well, the windshield didn’t freeze. #ice #carhacks #dontforgetobringatowel.” The video has garnered 29.4 million views, 2.5 million likes and thousands of comments.

One TikTok user said: “Mega underrated life hack. I do this every night, no faffing about in the morning, just towel off and go.” Another joked: “It’s like a pore strip for the car.”

A third user added: “It did work tho, just made a frozen towel in the process” while a fourth commented: “I’ve been doing this for 10 years. It legit works. You can slightly dampen the towel for friction in the beginning so it doesn’t move or blow off.”

Commenting on the success of the hack, another user said: “Now you have a clear windshield and a new best friend.” Another added: “That worked way better than I thought it would honestly.”

Lots of people compared the frozen towel to the character Towelie from South Park – a blue talking towel with white stripes. Another user commented: “Is that Towelie?” and others said: “It’s Towelie.”

Further TikTok users compared the frozen towel to a sled, a mat and even a magic carpet like in Aladdin. One TikTok user commented: “It’s his very own magic carpet.”

One person shared that she uses a windshield cover ice blocker that “works wonders”. Another suggested: “Buy a proper windscreen cover. Does job far better and (is) waterproof.”

A towel isn’t the only household item that has been used to defrost a car windshield. TikTok user Meggy G shared how a ziplock bag does the trick.

She suggests: “Take this with you as a sign to keep a ziplock bag in your car. No scrapper, no de-icer, just your little ziplock bag and some warm water.” Meggy explained her method: “Roll it over your windscreen while you have the warm air blowers on and the ice will just melt away.”
