The youngest son of a woman found fatally stabbed on Christmas Eve inside their Long Island home has been arrested and charged with her murder.
The suspect, 27-year-old Jeremy Emmanuel Lopez Ramirez, was taken into custody on Friday in Baldwin and charged with second-degree murder in connection with the slaying of Josefina Ramirez Montero.
Montero was discovered unresponsive on Tuesday in the living room of her apartment, located along Old Sunrise Highway in Massapequa, according to a police press release. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short time later.
Lopez Ramirez is accused of ambushing his 57-year-old mother — who was baking cookies at the time of the attack — upon returning from a trip to laundromat around 7 p.m. He allegedly stabbed her multiple times before fleeing the apartment, where he’d been living with his mom in recent weeks.
He was caught on surveillance video dumping the alleged murder weapon in front of the apartment, homicide investigators said.
A motive for the deadly attack remains unclear and an investigation into the matter is ongoing.
While police said there was no reported history of domestic violence at the home, Lopez Ramirez has a lengthy rap sheet dating back to 2018, Nassau County Police Department Det. Capt. Stephen Fitzpatrick told News 12. His record includes arrests for assault, criminal possession of a weapon, attempted murder and gang assault.
Lopez Ramirez was arraigned on Saturday at First District Court in Hempstead, where he pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder.
