Simple hairstyle loved by celebs works ‘beautifully at an any age’

Looking for a new hairstyle to flatter a mature complexion? There’s more to it than just chopping off the lengths to cheat the appearance of a fuller, rounder face.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Sally Brooks, Creative Director at Brooks and Brooks, said: “As we age, we see several different problems with our hair. From the obvious greys to finer texture and hair losing its natural body and shine, it needs different treatments to restore and keep it healthy and full.

“Keeping your hair easy to maintain, maximising shine and health, and wearing simple modern styles are some of the best anti-ageing tips for hair.”

Sally noted that the key to finding the perfect look is more about personal taste than taking general advice from stylists. “Hairstyles are less about drawing attention to or from certain things, but more embracing who you are and choosing the right hairstyle that is specific and personalised to you… age is just a number”, she said.

Plenty of celebrities have experimented with different styles to find the right ones, so where can you look for inspiration?

Diane Keaton

Diane Keaton – long bangs

Those wanting to keep the length but add some dimension to their hairstyle can do so with long bangs.

Stylist and Advanced Technician at Brooks and Brooks, Kara Sanderson, said: “Diane Keaton, 71, alters the length of her hair regularly but always manages to portray a smart and effortless look, maintaining long bangs being a style statement for her.

“The cut is strong yet soft and can be worn beautifully at any age.”

Longer layers with a strong baseline allow Diane to create some lift and bounce in the top without losing the strength of the cut. Meanwhile, the long bangs and an off-centre parting add glamour and youth to the style.

As for the colour, Diane opts for a blended root to allow her natural white hair to be present, giving the overall colour a very neutral and natural feel.

Kara added: “It’s important to remember that as we age, we not only lose colour pigment in our hair but also in our skin, so it’s key to complimenting the skin with your colour.”

Blythe Danner

Blythe Danner – mid-length layers

Blythe, 81, wears mid-length layers to create a soft and feminine shape and enhance the curl in her strands.

Kara said: “It’s dried in a relaxed but polished way. Keeping the colour dimensional by adding different tones, Blythe has gradually lightened her hair from the richer, golden blonde and has started moving more towards the pale cream pallets with platinum highlights; this blends beautifully with her natural colour, allowing her skin to appear richer and keeps her looking youthful.”

The length is notable for its versatility; a well-cut bob can be worn straight and strong or with natural movement and is more casual.

Rita

Rita Moreno – experimenting with short cuts

A short haircut can flatter many face shapes by adding definition at the high points of one’s complexion.

Kara said: “Rita Moreno, 93, is one of the most adventurous celebs regarding her hair, from short pixie cuts to classic bobs and a variety of different colour tones to enhance the natural greying hair.

“She has experimented with different shorter cuts which reflect her youthful, energetic spirit. Variety is the spice of life and changing it up keeps us young and interesting.”
