Over two thirds of parents rely on screens during holidays

New research has revealed a startling reliance on screen time, with over two thirds of parents admitting they use it to keep their children occupied during school holidays.

Almost all parents say they struggle with finding fun and engaging activities for their children during school holidays with four in ten saying they feel pressured to make the holidays as exciting as possible.

Four in ten say better access to information about potential destinations would help make planning possible day trips easier. Others also mentioned improved transport options could enhance their activity choices.

Tempcover’s managing director Marc Pell is encouraging families to think outside the box this half term: “You don’t have to jet off abroad or stick to the same old soft play centres, parks and coffee shops this half term,” he says.

“Exploring nearby gems could lead to even greater family adventures,” he added. To help, the temporary car insurance provider has developed a ‘micro adventure’ generator to come up with the ideal adventure based on your postcode.

By entering your postcode and specifying the type of excursion you’re interested in, the tool provides ideas for a potential school holiday adventure.

Marc Pell stated: “Our Micro Adventures generator is designed to be a valuable resource, helping parents uncover fresh and exciting activities just a short drive from their doorstep”.

While 57% of families do some planning for the school breaks, they also like to leave a little room for spontaneity. This makes the generator an ideal tool for those who enjoy ‘going with the flow’.

Day trips (54%) were voted the best way of creating meaningful memories, followed by a visit to the beach (52%) or going swimming or to a water park (35%).

Marc Pell from Tempcover further added: “The half term break is a great opportunity for families to connect, which is why it’s important to ensure everyone enjoys it to the fullest.

“A family road trip is the perfect way to escape the everyday routine and create memories that will last a lifetime.

“You don’t even need to own a car with temporary car insurance you can borrow one for the day, or parents can also take turns driving to lighten the load.

“That way, you can focus on what truly matters spending quality time together and making lasting memories.”
