A 20-year-old man was busted by Mayor Adam’s security detail after he broke into Gracie Mansion in the early hours of New Year’s Day, police said Thursday.
Michael Aromando climbed over a fence surrounding the mansion at E. 88th St. and East End Ave. on the Upper East Side about 4:20 a.m. Wednesday, cops said.
He was then spotted by a member of the mayor’s security detail entering the mansion through a door typically used by Adams, police said. The mayor was not home at the time.
The mayor’s security detail, comprised of NYPD officers, nabbed Aromando moments later on the second floor. He was arrested for burglary.
Police said Aromando did not steal anything and it wasn’t clear why he broke in.
He lives a half mile away and has no prior arrests, police said.
“Oh my god, I don’t know any of this,” a relative who asked that her name not be used said upon learning of the arrest. “He’s not that kind of kid.”
“None at all,” she said when asked if Aromando has any strong political views.
Aromando’s arraignment was pending in Manhattan Criminal Court Thursday.
