A dogexpert shared a technique for getting unruly canines to comply in a matter of minutes.
Sam Hoke believes there’s a foolproof method to placate excitable dogs. His solution? Simply deploy the “place command”.
It’s a method he describes as a “superpower” because it provides an invaluable distraction for dogs. To begin, Sam advises securing a raised bed that marks a precise spot for your hound.
Every time they get in the bed, a tasty treat should be their reward. Repetition here is key as you condition them: stay in bed, reward, repeat.
As positive reinforcement cements the connection between the bed and those delightful treats, Sam then suggests introducing the verbal cue “place”.
The rewarding ritual persists, now with the satisfaction of seeing your dog happily go to their designated zone, making them more serene with each success.
Once you’ve mastered this, you can take things up a level. Encourage your dog to lie down and rest in the area, giving them a treat if they listen well.
To instil this behaviour even further in your pet, use plenty of eye contact and consistently increase the time your pooch spends in their “place”.
When this is done, you can even put your furry friend to the test by introducing distractions to simulate real-life situations.
This training should hopefully help to ensure that your dog maintains a calm space, whatever may be happening around them.
The technique is proving to be a hit online – as it’s amassed more than 53,000 likes and a flood of favourable responses.
One happy dog owner commented: “My 5.5 month golden retriever puppy wakes up from his bed and goes straight to place without being asked any more. If I leave the room he will go to place and wait. It’s a useful command.”
Another fan of the advice shared their enthusiasm, saying: “This is without a doubt 100% true! ! It takes away all worries of your dog causing an inconvenient disturbance.”
