A dog trainer called dogstraining69 took to TikTok to share 12 things that are likely to hurt your dog’s feelings.
Pushing your dog away
When you push dogs away, this repeated rejection can lead to your dog being less affectionate with you and make them feel like they’ve done something wrong by approaching you.
Shouting at your dog
The dog trainer said that yelling at your dog is useless and doesn’t teach the dog anything but will instead frighten the pet and can lead to feelings of fear and anxiety.
Short and clear commands followed by rewards work better, according to the expert, and they should be consistent in wording and tone.
Interrupting their quiet time
Interrupting your pet while they rest will likely make them feel anxious and disrupt their sleep patterns as well as taking them by suprise.
Similarly, using your dog’s crate as punishment will also lead to your dog feeling distressed and frightened when this should be a safe place for them.
The dog trainer said you should place toys or treats to make it an inviting place thereby creating an environment they won’t want to avoid in the future.
Overwhelming them with strong scents
Dogs are highly sensitive to strong smells.
Cleaning products and perfumes can be toxic for them and trigger allergies or irritate their skin.
Being inconsistent with them
Dogs love routines and thrive off consistent rules and boundaries.
When you feed them at a different time or skip walking time, this can make them confused and lead to irrational behaviour.
Taking their food away while they are still eating will also really upset your dog and can make meal times stressful.
Forgetting their grooming needs
By forgetting their grooming needs can lead to irritation and infections and long nails can also hurt when they walk but it should be a calm process and reward them for it.
Laughing at your dog’s fears
By laughing at your dog when he is already scarred, you could actually the dog trust you less and make him feel insecure around you.
Petting their head
This may be suprising, but not all dogs like to be petted on their heads and some can even find it frightening or intimidating. If your dog doesn’t react well, respect their boundaries and space if they feel uncomfortable, as you would with another person.
