Do 30 second task around the home to save hundreds on bills | Personal Finance | Finance

As the winter months creep in, we’re all looking to save money where we can.

After all, it’s the time of year when we all use a lot more energy, which isn’t great news for our bank balances. Nonetheless, there are simple things you can do to make all the difference, and one trick is super easy.

Shannen, known as _greengal on TikTok, is known for sharing energy saving tips online, and she recently urged everyone to bleed their radiators. Carrying out the simple task, which takes around 30 seconds, will enable you to save both energy and money.

In the candid clip, she said: “The biggest thing that will make a difference to how hot your rads (radiators) get, and how you can save money on your energy bills this year, is to bleed rads.

“If you’re renting, it could have been a really long time since has been done, so I would recommend you do this if you’re renting. Also, it’s really inexpensive. These little keys only cost like two euro (£1.66), and it will make such a difference to your rads.”

What’s more is she said there are really big signs that indicate the simple task needs to be carried out. If you turn your heating on, and it’s not heating the whole way up, this means there is air trapped within the radiator and you need to bleed it out.

To use the nifty key, Shannen said all you need to do is attach it, turn it sideways and all the air will come out. Once you see the water starting to come out, all you need to do then is turn it back off.

It’s vital you don’t do this when the heating is on, as this will cause hot water to shoot out at you, so ensure you follow the correct instructions. Your heating must be off when you bleed the radiators.

According to experts, bleeding your radiators can actually lead to saving you around £1,000 a year on your bills. It’s a super important aspect of radiator care, and also results in heating your home more effectively.

Since the video was shared, it’s been viewed more than 4,000 times, and people were quick to comment too. It looks as though some people took time to get the hang of things.

One person said: “I learned to use a towel because, even though the heating was off, it splurted out dirt.”

Another wrote: “Oh my god. The rad in the bathroom is blocked, and I was going to call someone, but I think I’ll give it a go.”

A third replied: “Don’t forget to make sure the pressure on the boiler doesn’t drop too much otherwise it won’t work properly.”

Meanwhile, a fourth also commented: “We dont need a dad, we need a Shannen.”
