CUNY faculty and staff ratify new union contract

Unionized faculty and staff at the City University of New York have ratified a contract involving across-the-board raises and a $3,000 bonus, Chancellor Félix Matos Rodríguez announced Tuesday.

Ninety percent of Professional Staff Congress members who voted approved the agreement with the CUNY administration that includes nearly two years of back pay and runs through 2027. Over three weeks, 66% of eligible faculty and staff participated in the ratification vote.

“Every day our talented faculty and staff members put CUNY’s mission — to provide an exceptional public higher education to anyone who seeks one — into action,” Matos Rodríguez said in a statement. “This contract reflects the University’s commitment to these hardworking and dedicated individuals and will ultimately benefit CUNY’s students.”

Salaries will increase by at least 13.4%, the union said. Adjunct faculty, graduate student workers, and CUNY’s lowest-paid, full-time staff will get additional “equity” raises under the terms of the ratified contract.

“The significant gains in this contract are the result of PSC members’ solidarity and action,” said James Davis, PSC president and an English professor at Brooklyn College. “A 90% percent vote for ratification shows that an overwhelming majority of members know that this contract will make CUNY a better place to work and learn.”
