Body found on United Airlines plane that flew from Chicago to Maui

The body of a man was found in the wheel well of a United Airlines plane that flew from Chicago to Maui on Christmas Eve, officials said Wednesday.

Authorities did not immediately identify the dead man. The body was found on United Flight 202, which departed Chicago’s O’Hare Airport around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday and landed on schedule at about 2:15 p.m. at Kahului Airport in Maui.

The man’s cause of death was unclear. United said the wheel well of the Boeing 787-10 was only accessible from outside the aircraft, but it is unclear when it was accessed.

Maui police said they were “actively investigating” the case. United said it was assisting police in the investigation.

The disturbing discovery in Hawaii was not the only aircraft incident this holiday season. On Christmas morning, an Azerbaijan Airlines plane carrying 67 people crashed in Kazakhstan, killing 38 people on board.

An Embraer 190 traveling from the Azerbaijani capital of Baku to the Russian city of Grozny was diverted Wednesday morning due to weather and tried to make an emergency landing in Aktau, Azerbaijan, officials said. However, the plane crashed on landing, and only 29 people survived.
