12 dog breeds named as the ‘smartest’ and easiest to train

Dawn Kovell, director of behaviour and training at the Marin Humane Society, has named 12 dog breeds she deems the most intelligent.

Many people may consider intelligence to be how easily a dog trains and its receptiveness to commands or tricks. But according to a dog behaviour expert, there’s more to it.

She warned that while working and herding breeds are typically the smartest canine companions, they aren’t necessarily the best household pets. However, the “smartest” breeds can reach their full potential with the right nurturing and training.

Border Collie

This iconic dog breed originated in the border region between England and Scotland and was traditionally bred for herding sheep. Traits, including boundless energy levels and quick learning, undoubtedly make them the most intelligent.

German Shepherd

German Shepherds are commonly used as working dogs and have been devoted companions to the armed forces, police, and security services for years. While this is largely down to their strong senses, they are quick-thinkers too and were used as the first-ever guide dogs. While they can be lovely pets when trained correctly, German Shepherds require lots of mental stimulation and exercise.

Shetland Sheepdog

This fluffy breed shares similar herding capabilities as a Border Collie, and there’s good reason for it. Shetland Sheepdogs are hard-working and easy to train, making them top candidates in agility and obedience trials.

Poodle

This breed is highly receptive, responding well to human emotions and quickly adapting to different environments. While many people know Poodles to be popular candidates in cross-breeds, Poodles deserve a reputation for their effortless approach to training and picking up new tricks.

Doberman Pinscher

This breed is a “serious protector” known for being loyal and fearless, says Dawn, but they still make affectionate companions. They are dutiful and work hard in police and military settings as rescue dogs and for therapy.

Rottweiler

Rottweilers are steadfast and natural guardians. Originally bred in Germany, these dogs drove farmers’ cattle and pulled butchers’ carts. Dawn said, “This breed excels at working for the military, police, and customs—but also makes for a very loyal family member.”

Golden Retriever

Golden retrievers are known for being friendly and loyal pets and boast impressive intelligence. They originated as hunting dogs, prized for their ability to retrieve game from water, and are easy to train when done consistently. Due to its gentle temperament, this breed excels in therapy work and is often used as a service dog.

Labrador Retriever

This breed is friendly and versatile, and it has many known duties. Labrador retrievers are family dogs, hunting dogs, guide dogs and even champions in sensing narcotics. Training them is straightforward, especially when there is food involved.

Australian Cattle Dog

Australian Cattle Dogs have been bred in the UK since the 1980s and have notable intelligence traits such as awareness, curious nature, and agile herding skills. Dawn warned: “Be aware that this breed has boundless mental and physical energy, so owners should exercise them sufficiently and even train them in herding or tracking.”

American Staffordshire Terrier

Also known as AmStaffers, these agile dogs are easy to train thanks to their intelligent minds. They are hard-working and stoic, making them excellent guard dogs.

Australian Shepherds

Shepherd dogs are renowned for their herding abilities, and the Australian breed is no different. Intelligent and hard-working, these dogs have a natural desire to herd other creatures. Dawn said, “Their strong work ethic makes them a good match for owners who live an active lifestyle, but they may not be the right fit for individuals who are more sedentary.”

Bloodhounds

The bloodhound is an easy-going breed known for its keen sense of smell. Bloodhounds are pack dogs and have a great ability to learn, so they are often used in search and rescue operations. They enjoy company and are good around kids, said Dawn.
