Bedsheets will be soft and fresh again if you put this 57p item in washing machine

You can make your bedsheets hotel-quality fresh if you include this one item in your washing machine.

Adding a cup of baking soda to your wash will help your sheets come out fresher and take away the stiff feeling, says Christian Alexander, the president and CEO of Nest Bedding.

Many washing products are packed with chemicals so using something more natural can help to provide a crisper clean.

Adding baking powder can turn basic inexpensive sheets into silky soft bedding. Baking soda is available for 57p at Tesco.

All you have to do is put your stiff sheets into the washer with one cup of baking soda and wash for one cycle.

Be sure to completely omit your regular detergent this time around, as it tends to lock chemicals into the sheets.

For better results, you can try starting your washer on hot water and then switch to cold as it enters the rinse cycle.

You may also want to add vinegar during the rinse cycle to prevent the formation of carbon dioxide from bubbling over.

When washing a larger set of sheets, you may want to wash the bottom sheet as well as any top sheets separately to ensure there’s ample room in your washing machine.

If they are squashed in, not only can this cause problems for your machine, but the softening process may not be so effective.

When washed with warm water, the bicarbonate of soda will loosen up the sheets and get rid of any smells that remain from the production process.

Washing your sheets in this way means you’ll be able to give them a more natural clean which you should do every once in a while.

Another tip which may be a much more obvious tip but products like fabric softener were made to get your bedding as silky soft as possible.

Simply add the recommended amount of fabric softener to your machine along with your regular detergent when washing, or you can even just use the softener by itself and run your sheets through a wash or dry cycle.
