Dog trainer’s simple 5-step routine gets pets tidying up their toys

A couple who give training tips for dog parents have shared how you can get your pet to tidy up its toys.

Amanda and David, owners of “mini aussie and golden gal duo” Ayce and Aria, are digital creators who share dog training tips and tricks. Their most popular Instagram tutorial of 2024 was how to teach your dog to tidy up.

In the Instagram reel, Amanda can be seen teaching the Australian Shepherd Ayce how to tidy up his toys. She demonstrates a simple tutorial to help other dog owners introduce tidy up time.

The first step Amanda teaches is how to get your dog to hold an object or toy in its mouth before getting Ayce to pick the toy up from the floor and hold it in his mouth again. Next she moves the toy further away and then places a toy bin under Ayce and teaches him to drop it in the bin.

She practises this with different toys, moves the toy bin further away and lastly starts using the command ‘clean up’. Amanda repeated the steps in the caption of the reel which reads: “Our #1 most popular tutorial of 2024! How to teach your dog to clean up!

“This is essentially a combination of ‘hold it’ and ‘drop it’. Make sure your dog understands these commands before starting to incorporate them together. I have a reel for ‘hold it’ that is on my reel page!”

The tutorial written in her caption is:

Step 1: Teach “hold it”

Step 2: Practice “hold it” with an object on the floor and farther away

Step 3: Place a basket under your dog and teach “drop it”

Step 4: Practice “drop it” with the basket farther away

Step 5: Combine Step 2 and Step 4, and use the command “clean up”

The Instagram reel has had 904,000 views, 24,000 likes and more than 100 comments. Some users shared in the comment section that they are also trying to teach their dogs how to tidy up.

One dog mum said: “One of the cutest tricks! I need to revisit this one with Rue.” Another dog parent added: “We’re working on this one!”

Others said they would use this tutorial on their own dogs. An Instagram user commented: “This is such a good explanation on how to teach this! I’m really going to try it.”

A second echoed: “I need to try this! Thank you.” Someone else also shared how helpful they have found Amanda and David’s tips writing: “This is one I struggle with but learned three tricks following your page.”
