Jennifer Lopez stuns in ‘inspiring’ new sports biopic now streaming | Films | Entertainment

The new sports biopic dubbed as one of the most ‘inspiring’ films of recent times is now available for streaming from the comfort of your home.

Featuring performances by Jharrel Jerome and Jennifer Lopez, the film delves into the life of an American wrestler who achieved greatness despite being born without a right leg.

Anthony Robles (played by Jerome) clinched the NCAA individual wrestling national championship in 2011 and has gone on to inspire others as a motivational speaker and writer. Lopez plays his mother, Judy, facing her own battles in an abusive relationship while raising five children.

Today (Thursday, January 16), Amazon Prime Video exclusively debuts this riveting film, ensuring viewers wont want to miss it.

At the London premiere, Lopez shared, “I read the script and I thought ‘This is a very inspiring, victorious story about Anthony’s life’ and I saw Judy’s character as kind of a smaller character.

“But when I met Judy and I met Anthony I realised how much of a story it was about the two of them growing up together. Her support and love of him and then him inspiring her.”

The acclaimed actress and singer further expressed how deeply meeting Judy, and understanding her story moved her a story that echoes the experiences of many women.

Lopez emphasised, “I wanted her to feel safe with me in sharing details because as great as the story is, without the struggle, that’s what makes it great.

“For me, it was just a really full, beautiful character to play and I really enjoyed losing myself. I didn’t want anybody to see me in it, I wanted them to see Judy in it.

“That was only thanks to the fact that Judy opened up to me, she gave me so many great nuggets.”

Critics and audiences alike have lauded Anthony’s tale as an inspirational tour de force, with Lopez’s portrayal at the forefront.

Variety extolled her turn as “what may be the fullest screen performance she has ever given”, noting that she “makes you feel the wrung-out despair, as well as the will she summons, as an act of love, to overcome it.”

Screen Daily commended her poignant subtlety, asserting, “Lopez pulls from a deep well of sadness that never tips over into maudlin.”

An impressed movie-goer raved in a five-star Google review: “This is an inspiring film that tells the remarkable true story of wrestler Anthony Robles and his family.

“It will have you rooting for him and inspired by his pure determination. The unwavering love between Anthony and his mother is another element that forms the emotional core of the film.

“The entire cast delivers exceptional performances. This is an uplifting story, feel-good movie that I loved.”
