Partially deaf pug doesn’t respond to name but hears something else

A partially deaf pug has received lots of attention online after her owner shared a heartwarming TikTok video of her responding to an adorable sound.

The pug, named Loulou, doesn’t respond to her name but could be seen running towards her owner after hearing the sound of a cheese wrapper being opened. In the clip she gets off her bed, using a ramp, and goes towards her owner in the hopes of receiving a bite of the snack.

Loulou’s owner posted the video, titled ‘ How to summon a senior pug from their nap,’ on her TikTok page ‘Louolou the Pug.’ The caption reads: “She’s partially deaf and doesn’t respond when I call her name, but somehow she always hears the cheese wrapper.”

The video starts with Loulou sitting on her bed with her head down and a pink blanket on to keep warm. After she hears her owner pick up a Babybel cheese she walks down her ramp to get off the bed and slowly runs towards the cheese.

The clip has garnered 787,000 views, 126,000 likes and nearly 700 comments at the time of writing. It has also been shared 20,000 times and favourited by 6,780 users.

In the comment section, one person said: “What a cutie. She’s even mastered the skill of making sure she takes the blanket with her, so once she’s done with the cheese she can just plop back down and nap anywhere.”

Another added: “She’s so talented at keeping her blanket on.” A third commented: “She’s so majestic, she looks like a queen with her pink cape.”

Other users who have partially deaf dogs said they are also able to hear sounds relating to food. A pitbull owner shared: “My pittie was born deaf but he can hear a cheese wrapper three states away.”

A second user said: “My senior dog is just like that. She’ll ignore me 9/10 times that I call her name but she’ll suddenly be hearing just fine when I’m opening the cheese drawer in the fridge.”

Another user echoed: “Always amazes me how my dog (14) can’t hear his name from three feet away yet can be asleep upstairs, hear the fridge door open and be at my side in a nano second.” Several people commented on Loulou’s ramp and asked where the owner got it from.

Dogs Trust UK previously shared some tips for owning a deaf or blind dog. Advice for those with a deaf dog include to be considerate and let them know where you are as “deaf dogs will be startled if touched when they are not expecting it” and it is good to “move your position so that you are in their line of vision” so they can see you more easily.

The dog charity says gaining a deaf dog’s attention when they aren’t looking at you “can be a challenge”. Deaf dogs may also “worry about where you are if you leave the room without them seeing,” so it might be helpful to “move past them on your way out so they can watch where you go.”
