Morrisons issues warning to Christmas shoppers as deliveries are delayed


Morrisons shoppers across the country have been left in despair due to issues with its loyalty scheme.

Like the Tesco Clubcard, Morrisons’ More rewards card entitles customers to money off their shop and the chance to earn points, which can be converted into spending vouchers.

However, Morrisons says shoppers have been blocked from receiving discounts on their grocery shopping due to current issues.

Some disgruntled customers have reported that their online orders have been delayed or cancelled entirely, with Morrisons indicating that click-and-collect purchases are primarily affected.

The turmoil coincides with what is forecasted to be the busiest shopping day of the year for supermarkets in the lead-up to the Christmas rush.

Expressing their regret for the disorder, a Morrisons spokesperson confirmed that supermarkets were “experiencing some system issues” affecting “some discount cards and collection orders.”

They said: “For More Card customers who have Morrisons Fivers to redeem, these will be done manually in store by colleagues.”

Morrisons assured customers while More Card prices are not registering, a 10 percent discount will be applied to the customer’s entire shop.

The supermarket further clarified in an online statement: “For Click and Collect orders, we are asking customers to wait for an email to inform them that their order is ready for collection before heading to store.”

It continued: “Some home delivery orders may be arriving late today – and we will be communicating directly with those customers affected. We sincerely apologise to our customers for this inconvenience.”

The issues have come at a tricky time for the supermarket giant, which has been promoting substantial discounts on Christmas dinner food, including vegetables, for weeks.

Frustrated shoppers, many of whom have relied on being able to do their Christmas grocery shop today, took to social media to share their disappointment.

One shopper shared on X, formerly Twitter: “I’ve just wasted an hour of my life shopping at Morrisons only to find out by checking my receipt that I’ve been charged £40 more than I should because the More Cards aren’t working. No communication at all, so loads have probably overspent without knowing.”

Another chimed: “Another deal I over paid on this morning. Morrisons with your system failure and no advice until I was packing my shopping! I’ve kept my receipt can I expect money refunds???”

A third shared: “…at 7.20am this morning I missed out/paid extra on all the offers I purchased in store on a £169 Christmas shop!!! What are you going to do about that Morrisons? Absolutely fuming and no one warned us as we went into the shop that the system was down!”

One social media claimed their order had been cancelled. The shopper posted on X: “Thanks so much @Morrisons for cancelling my delivery without any warning. No contact, no email, phone call, nothing to explain why. Superb customer service.”

Rival supermarket Iceland took to the social media platform to lure disgruntled shoppers with their last Christmas deliveries, writing: “Don’t let @‌Morrisons IT issues ruin your Christmas. Our delivery slots are going fast but we still have availability for today and tomorrow.”

According to retail analysts at Kantar, today will be the busiest day of the year for shops as millions of Britons scramble to their local supermarkets for last-minute Christmas food and drink purchases.

Supermarket sales are expected to soar, surpassing £13billion over December’s four weeks for the first time.
