A lost season for the Jets could be the last season of the Aaron Rodgers–Davante Adams connection.
Adams acknowledged Tuesday that he does not know what the future holds for him and his longtime quarterback beyond the Jets’ final four games of the 2024 campaign.
“It would be a sad thing for sure, but hopefully that’s not the case,” Adams said on FanDuel TV’s “Up & Adams” of potentially parting with Rodgers after the season.
“That’s why we’ve got to make the most of these ones that we have here.”
Adams and Rodgers, who played eight seasons together in Green Bay before reuniting on the Jets this year, connected for their 79th touchdown during Sunday’s 32-26 overtime loss in Miami.
That moved them into sole possession of fourth place for the most career touchdowns for a quarterback and wide receiver duo, trailing only Peyton Manning and Marvin Harrison (114); Steve Young and Jerry Rice (92); and Dan Marino and Mark Clayton (82).
But with the Jets falling to 3-10, speculation continues to swirl about whether the Jets will move on from the 41-year-old Rodgers and the soon-to-be-32-year-old Adams in the offseason.
The Jets were 2-4 when they acquired Adams in a long-anticipated trade with the Las Vegas Raiders in October. Last month, Adams said on “Up & Adams” that he did not regret being traded to the Jets, who are now 1-6 with the All-Pro wide receiver.
Adams has 40 receptions for 453 yards and three touchdowns in seven games with the Jets after hauling in nine catches for 109 yards and a score on Sunday.
“I love playing with [Adams],” Rodgers said Tuesday on ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show.”
“He’s such a great player, great human being. Even though it’s been such a rough year, one of the many beautiful, bright spots has been being able to reconnect with [Adams], not just the on-the-field connection, but getting to sit next to him in meetings and pick his brain and the text messages at night when he’s thinking about the game and I’m thinking about the game.”
The Jets added Adams shortly after they fired head coach Robert Saleh. They have since fired general manager Joe Douglas.
Rodgers, who missed all but four offensive snaps in 2023 with a torn Achilles, has started each of the Jets’ 13 games this season, despite dealing what Fox’s Jay Glazer reported to be a Grade 2 hamstring strain, an MCL sprain and a high-ankle sprain at different points.
On Tuesday, Rodgers said he intends to play in all 17 games, even though the Jets have been eliminated from playoff contention.
“If you’re healthy, I feel like that’s your responsibility,” Rodgers said. “It turns into, ‘What are you playing for?’ I think, first and foremost, is pride.”
