As the iconic Coca-Cola Christmas truck embarks on its UK tour this festive season, some are only just realising that the popular beverage can do more than just satisfy your thirst.
As well as being a favourite soft drink for many, you may be surprised to discover that Coca-Cola can also assist with your cleaning tasks and household chores.
The secret lies in the unique composition of the drink. With its low acidic pH level of 2.8, Coca-Cola is comparable to fresh lemon juice and vinegar. This means that instead of drinking the sweet liquid, you could use it as an economical solution for household cleaning.
Andrea Philips from Airtasker’s Lifestyle Editorial Team has unveiled six Coca-Cola cleaning hacks you need to try this Christmas. From descaling your kettle to cleaning your car’s windshield, the surprisingly powerful cleaning properties of Coca-Cola are a cost-effective revelation.
So, if you have leftover Coca-Cola after the big day, put it to good use and get your home sparkling clean just in time for the New Year with these six cleaning tips.
1. Descale your kettle
Descaling your kettle of limescale has never been easier thanks to this Coca-Cola cleaning hack. Simply boil a kettle full of Coke and leave it to stand for 30 minutes.
TikTok user Carolina Mccauley was seen trying out the hack on her account as the post went viral, garnering more than 10,000 likes. After viewing the clip, one viewer thanked her with: “Thanks I am about to try.” While another confessed: “Didn’t even know that was a thing.”
2. Freshen up your toilet
Coca-Cola has made quite the splash as a DIY cleaning solution for toilet bowls. Pour the fizzy beverage around the inside of the loo, let it sit for around an hour, flush away and give any remaining grime a good scrub with the toilet brush.
3. Dust off rust
Small rusty items can be rejuvenated after a night soaking in a glass of Coke. A quick scrub in the morning should make the rust simpler to wipe away.
4. Wipe away grout mould
To eradicate mould from grout, douse the affected spots with Coke or lay down towels soaked in the soft drink. Let it soak in briefly before wiping off, although more scrubbing might be required for tougher mould.
5. Wash your windscreen
A can of cola poured over the vehicle’s windscreen is your ticket to removing pesky bug residue and other grime. Follow up with a thorough hosing down to wash away the soda solution.
6. Combat stubborn fabric stains
If fabrics are marred by stubborn blood or grease stains, Coke could be your unexpected ally. Add a can into the washing machine along with your usual detergent and run as normal, for a chance at pristine laundry.
