Drunk driver crashes into boat on L.I., starts 4-boat fire: cops

A woman driving drunk on Long Island slammed into a boat at a Suffolk County marina, starting a fire that spread to three other boats, cops said.

Lorrie Ibe, 54, was rescued from the scene and then charged with driving while intoxicated, WABC reported.

Cops said Ibe was driving the wrong way down Route 231 in Babylon in a 2021 Kia Forte, according to Newsday. She then crossed back over the median, went through an intersection, slammed through a fence at Suffolk Marine Center and struck a boat, police said.

The impact of the crash caused the boat to catch fire, and the blaze spread to three other boats at the marina about 30 miles east of Central Park, News 12 Long Island reported.

Responding officers and a bystander who witnessed the fire pulled Ibe from her vehicle, and she was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, according to Newsday.

No one else was killed or injured in the chaotic incident. The Babylon Fire Department responded and doused the blaze.

Ibe will be arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip when physically capable, authorities said.

Accidents involving boats are somewhat common on Long Island. In early September, Louis and Renee Deritis were killed in a boat-on-boat crash in Great South Bay, when their 27-foot boat struck a larger fishing vessel, according to authorities. No one was charged with a crime in that incident.
