Professional cleaner’s £1.75 hack leaves your vacuum smelling fresh

Vacuums are essential for maintaining clean and odour-free homes, but did you realise that the vacuum cleaner can sometimes be the source of unpleasant smells?

Luckily, there’s an amazingly simple solution to keep your device smelling fresh, and it requires just one common household item.

Welsh professional cleaner Claire, known on Instagram as SisterPledge, delights her 88,700 followers with “realistic and easy” domestic and cleaning tips on her @sisterpledgecleans account. Her latest Instagram reel demonstrating how to deodorise your vacuum using an everyday tea bag has been a hit with her audience.

The informative reel starts off with Claire taking out a Yorkshire tea bag from its packaging, overlaying it with “Tea bag hack.”

Claire proceeds by opening the vacuum lid and inserting the tea bag into the dust compartment. She advises: “Put one fresh tag bag into your vacuum cleaner bag/dust canister.”

After reassembling the vacuum, she continues her cleaning routine as usual. Claire elaborates on the hack within the clip, stating: “Black tea acts as a natural deodoriser, absorbing odours inside your vacuum.”

In the video caption, Claire informs: “The tannins in black tea help absorb moisture and pet smells naturally. If you want a bit of extra scent, add a couple of drops of essential oil it’s perfectly safe! You can use any brand, as long as it’s black tea. Give it a try next time you vacuum!”

The clever trick has gone viral, amassing over 2,700 likes as netizens applaud the ingenuity. One user gushed: “What a good hack!” Another chimed in with appreciation, saying: “What a great idea. Thanks for sharing.”

Yet, some couldn’t resist tossing in a bit of banter, with one quipping: “Hi love can you put the vacuum on, I am gagging for a brew.” A second teased: “Then make hubby a brew after with the bag.”

A third joked about the cost, saying: “Do you know how much those beauties are,” while a fourth humorously scolded: “How dare you use a Yorkshire teabag for this, blasphemy!”

For those looking to try the tip, a box of 40 Yorkshire Tea bags is currently retailing at Tesco for £1.75, but there’s a whole world of tea varieties out there to explore.
