Wetherspoons announces new hotel opening this month

Wetherspoons has announced it is set to open a new hotel in the UK later this month. The popular chain has more than 800 pubs across 900 locations.

The chain, which is owned by Tim Martin, and has more than 50 hotels in the country is adding The Mile Castle in Newcastle upon Tyne to its portfolio.

Wetherspoons will create 70 jobs taking the pub and hotel’s staff number to 200.

It is set to open on November 26 at 8am following an extensive redevelopment project costing £2.8 million.

According to Wetherspoons website: “The hotel has been constructed within the grade II listed property originally built by W Gibson and formerly Gibbs Chambers in 1861, adjoining the existing pub in Westgate Road and Grainger Street.”

“The Mile Castle hotel has 26 bedrooms, 19 of which can accommodate twin occupancy (including four family rooms and two accessible rooms), with seven double rooms also available.

“Occupying four floors (lower ground, ground, first and second floors), the hotel has two rooms designed specifically for guests needing accessible facilities.”

Guests can enjoy an en suite bathroom, tea and coffee-making facilities, and a flat-screen television with Freeview TV and free Wi-Fi.

There’s also a hair dryer, air conditioning and temperature control.

The Mile Castle has a new beer garden which is also set to open on November 26 which was a former car park on the site.

Wetherspoon’s grand opening follows the pub’s opening, which took place in September 2024, after undergoing redevelopment and refurbishment work.

The total cost of redeveloping and refurbishing the pub, hotel and beer garden was more than £5 million.

Kris Lee, pub manager at The Mile Castle, said: “We are looking forward to welcoming people to the hotel and believe that it will be a great asset to the pub, as well as to the city.

“The new beer garden will also be a great new attraction for the pub – and I am sure that it will be welcomed by customers.”

JD Wetherspoon is set to shut its pub doors in Edinburgh on November 3. Foot of the Walk bar in Leith thanked customers for their loyalty.

A spokesperson for Wetherspoon said: “We would like to thank our staff and customers for their loyalty to the pub over many years. Wetherspoon does, on occasion, sell pubs, and this is the situation here”.

It comes as locals tried to save the pub from closing by launching a petition which gathered more than 300 signatures.
