Ultra-rare penny coin can sell for £140k – but only with one detail

Are you aware that you could be sitting on a goldmine if you possess this rare coin?

Certain coins are worth a staggering amount, and it requires someone with immense patience to unearth such treasures. If you’re a keen collector, there’s a penny you should be looking for in your change right now.

TikTok user @CoinCollectingWizard revealed finding this “ultra-rare” version could fetch up to £140,000. In a post to his 207,500 followers, the expert disclosed the penny coin is from 1937 and was minted to commemorate King Edward VIII.

He explained: “This is the 1937 penny and was minted in celebration of the reign of King Edward VIII. However the plans were abandoned in December 1936 following the abdication of the royal to marry American divorcee Wallace Simpson.

“This coin was one of around 50 that were produced to evaluate the design. Now what you need to do is search your old pre-decimal pennies for any from the year 1937 when you find a 1937 this doesn’t mean you found the ‘super rare’ version.”

He added: “What you need to do is check the obverse side of the coin also known as the head side. If your coin has King Edward VIII, then yes you have found an ultra-rare version and can easily sell this coin for £140,000.”

Sadly, if you can’t spot the King’s profile on your penny, then it’s neither rare nor valuable. Since the video hit the internet, it snagged nearly 500 likes and sparked dozens of comments.

One user posted: “I have.” Another chimed in asking: “How much is it exactly worth?”

In other coin news, recently we saw a rare penny hit headlines for its mega worth.

The same TikTok user posted a video which begins with the cleaning of a pre-decimal penny from 1899 – a risky move that could potentially damage the coin.

He explained: “Here we have the 1894 pre-decimal penny and this was actually the last pre-decimal penny to feature a young head of Queen Victoria or otherwise known as Bun Head.

“As you can see, the obverse features the bust of Victoria facing left hair in a bun.”
