‘Dangerous’ money-saving cleaning hack could ‘burn your house down’

A furniture expert has issued a stark warning against attempting certain viral cleaning hacks circulating on social media, cautioning they could pose serious dangers.

While cleaning hacks can be very helpful to make a laborious task easier, some hacks online should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Adeel ul-Haq, from Bunk Beds, has expressed concern over a TikTok hack. The video that suggested using a DIY cleaning solution to remove stains from mattresses by pressing a hot iron over a damp towel.

While the video has been removed, Adeel said this hack could burn your house down.

Adeel explained that combining household products like baking soda, detergent, and fabric softener in this way is not only ineffective but potentially deadly.

He warned that fabric softener can make mattresses highly flammable, increasing fire risks in the home.

“Using fabric softener on a mattress can make it ignite and burn up to six times faster,” Adeel explained.

Additionally, applying heat from an iron to a mattress soaked with this mixture could lead to dangerous malfunctions or even cause the iron to explode.

Adeel strongly advised against homemade solutions that use hazardous combinations of ingredients.

He urged people to opt for store-bought products designed specifically for safe cleaning.

“Though they may cost more, professionally formulated cleaners offer safety and peace of mind,” he said.
