3 keys to a Jets victory against the Colts

STOP COLTS GROUND GAME

At this point of the season, the Jets’ keys sound like a broken record. However, many of the same issues continue to plague the team. One of those issues is stopping the run and setting the edge, an area the Jets have struggled with since last season. Against the Cardinals last week, the Jets defense allowed 147 rushing yards and three TDs.

The task won’t get any easier this weekend with Anthony Richardson, Jonathan Taylor and the Colts coming to town. Indianapolis averages 121.3 rushing yards per game, the 14th best in the NFL. This week, the Jets worked on tackling and defensive fundamentals after missing 20 tackles against the Cardinals. Indianapolis will start three rookie offensive linemen: center Tanor Bortolini, left tackle Matt Goncalves and right guard Dalton Tucker. The Jets’ defensive line needs to take advantage of this matchup.

SCORE TDS EARLY

The Jets have scored just six points (two field goals) on their opening drives this season. With their offense struggling, Gang Green needs to get into an early rhythm just from a positive morale standpoint. Too often this season, the Jets have let opponents find the end zone first, forcing them to play from behind. Considering the Jets’ offense ranks 26th in yards and points per game, they really can’t afford to give up an early lead to any team. The Jets must emphasize running the football early with RB Breece Hall. He averages 4.1 yards per carry and has rushed for 554 yards and three TDs. If the Jets can get off to an early start and take the lead, they will be able to use Hall more in both the running and passing game.

HEAT ON RICHARDSON

The Colts benched Richardson two weeks ago because he completed 44.4% of his passes, the lowest in the league. He also has thrown seven interceptions in six games. Gang Green needs to get pressure on Richardson, whether with its front four or by blitzing linebackers and defensive backs. Too often during his career, Richardson panics when he sees pressure coming, which has turned into careless turnovers. If the Jets defense can generate interceptions and fumbles, that could leave their offense with a short field.
